History: Found in the wilds of Sumatra and Java, Patchouli has long been used in Asia for a wide variety of purposes, from an antidote to snake venom to a remedy for headaches. Patchouli spread from Asia to the West in the 18th century; during this time, silk traders from China traveling to the Middle East packed their silk cloth with dried patchouli leaves to prevent moths from laying eggs on the cloth. Supposedly, Patchouli was used as both a fragrance and insect repellent in the linen chests of Queen Victoria.
