Traditions Native American tribes have used smoking herbs as medicine, sacraments and offerings since the Ice Age. Native cedar, juniper and sagebrush were the original botanicals burned at gatherings. When other varieties of sage and artemisia escaped from early colonial gardens, they were soon blended into the "smudge mixtures."

Eucalyptus, native of Australia and used by the Aborigines, was introduced to California in the 1800s. Blue and Lemon-scented Eucalyptus are enjoyed for their clean,uplifting and antiseptic aromas.
