Absinthe liquor is an alcoholic drink made
with an extract from wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). For over 200 years,
absinthe has enjoyed the reputation of being a creativity enhancer and
aphrodisiac. It is an emerald green absinthe drink, which is very bitter (due to
the presence of absinthin) and is therefore traditionally poured over a
perforated absinthe spoon full of sugar into a glass of water. IAmShaman is
proud to introduce carefully crafted
ABSINTHE KITS
that contain all-organic, and top quality ingredients.
Said to have been popular with the likes of Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso and
Hemingway, absinthe is rapidly regaining a wide following. Henri-Louis Pernod's
original absinthe recipe included angelica, aniseed, fennel, hyssop, juniper,
nutmeg and wormwood (which contains the neurotoxin thujone). Some versions then
have chlorophyll added to give absinthe a green hue thus giving rise to its
romantic nickname "La Fée Verte" or the green fairy. Absinthe distilled from
wormwood is commonly available in Central Europe, Spain and France, but both the
product and the technique is banned almost every else. But naturally steeped
strong absinthe is also becoming well liked as a base for cocktails all over the
modern world
The oldest technique for making absinthe used the simple method of steeping
wormwood and the other ingredients in an alcoholic drink, such as vodka, beer or
wine is the most ritualistic and authentic way of making absinthe. This method
of making absinthe is far simpler, quicker and less likely to be illegal than
any method involving heating the alcohol and herbs (which my contravene local
distillation regulations). It also produces very acceptable results.
We have created for you this unique kit that has:
• a signature formulation of various strains
of wormwood and extracts
• a highly recommended authentic formula of flavoring agents (150 year old)
• pure cane sugar cubes
• 2 organic cotton muslin strain bags
• lab quality glass ware
• A pamphlet on absinth and complete instructions.
Of course, as with all things in life, products of this quality cost a little
more. Drink it with a little sugar and water or as a base for your favorite
cocktail. Either way, Absinthe is one of life's great pleasures.
The magical quality is best described by the poet, Ernest Dowson, one of the
best known of the Decadents, an absinthian and, unusually for the time, an
Englishman, Dowson understood the romantic properties of the green spirit:
"Whiskey and beer are for fools," he once said; "absinthe has the power of the
magicians; it can wipe out or renew the past, and annul or foretell the future."
Absinthe serving instructions: First you pour roughly three ounces of absinthe into a heavy parfait-style
stemmed absinthe glass. A perforated absinthe spoon (sometimes very elaborately
so) is set upon the rim of the glass and on the spoon is placed a cube of sugar.
Ice-cold water is ever so slowly dripped from a glass carafe designed
specifically for that purpose, onto the cube. The sugar dissolves and you
continue pouring until the ratio of absinthe to water is about two to five
parts, depending upon your taste and fortitude. Give the absinthe drink a spin
with the spoon and drink like you dripped - slowly. |
